Aberdeen

Aberdeen is 40km towards northeast side of Saskatoon, situated conveniently on No.15 Fish Creek. In 2006, the population was 527, making Aberdeen the 2,939th most populous town belonging to central Saskatchewan. The earliest records suggest that people began living in this part of Canada in the 1890s. The first settlers in this part of Saskatchewan were mostly immigrants from Ukraine, Scotland, Britain and Russia. Most of the early settlers were from Eastern Canada and Atlantic Canada, of mostly Scottish or English decent. Ukrainians mostly arrived between 1898 and 1899. There were also people from Manitoba (Mennonites) but these arrived in early 20th Century (1901 to be precise). Railway lines connecting Aberdeen with other localities nearby were established in 1905. This brought more business and people as well. Wheat (specifically hard wheat) was a great source of business, and there was export of as many as 120 rails in 1905. By 1930, there was a lot of business in Aberdeen; however, this success was short-lived and a fire on its main street in 1937 caused huge losses and damages. Today, there are recreational centers such as the Aberdeen Rec Complex where people can find a remarkable library, curling rink, ice rink, meeting room, dance studio, bowling alley and a music room. Although Aberdeen is a small town, the life here is quite serene and pleasant.
