Herschel

Herschel is more of a community than a town, located 37km northwest of the town of Rose town and 70 kilometer southwest of Saskatoon at the junction of highway 61 and 656. The population is 50 people. The town was founded by German Canadians and settled by Mennonites, the village was named after a 19th century physicist and astronomer Sir John Fredrick William Herschel.
Herschel is often referred to as the heart of Saskatchewan, the small community of Herschel has a lot going for it. The town is located near ancient ruins and caves with petro glyphs, this town hold historical significance. You can visit the area to discover the history of the area by inspecting the local artifacts. It’s an interesting way to explore Saskatchewan’s rich culture
The town sits in the midst of a thriving agricultural community. When visiting Herschel make sure to look into all the displays, artifacts, videos, and paintings, exhibiting the history of the First Nations and the plains buffalo, at the Ancient Echoes Interpretive Centre. Tours can easily be arranged through the Interpretive centre.
In 2005 a dinosaur fossil was discovered near Herschel and was named after the town Dolichorhynchops Herschelensis. A newly discovered species has only been found near this town.
