Moving Checklist: What to Do Before and After You Move

Moving can be a stressful experience, but there are ways to simplify the process. Moving requires plenty of planning and preparation to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. To help make your move stress-free and organized, here’s a checklist filled with tips on what to do before and after you move. 

 

Before Your Move:

• Decide which items you want to keep, donate, or sell

• Create an inventory list of all the items you plan to move 

• Book movers or rental truck 

• Notify utility companies about your move date 

• Pack up your non-essentials first 

• Take pictures of all furniture before moving to document its condition

• Label boxes clearly according to room destination 

• Have cash available for tipping movers (if necessary) 

  

During Your Move:

• Make sure all walkways are clear for easy access for movers 

• Wear wearing comfortable clothing and shoes for lifting heavy objects 

• Keep valuables on your person at all times 

• Be sure that packed boxes are securely sealed with tape so nothing is lost in transit

 

After Your Move: 

• Clean out any empty containers such as cardboard boxes or plastic bins 

• Unpack the essentials first like beds and toilets so they are ready when you need them most  

• Connect internet services if possible prior to completely unpacking  

• Set up a new address with your local post office/town hall department  

• Reconnect all appliances before attempting use them if applicable

 

Getting organized ahead of time and executing each step of the moving process carefully will help you have a successful move in no time. Don’t forget to ask for help if you need it!
